— 32½ inch 9.68 pound Burbot caught by Luc van Brenk of Park Ridge in Lake Michigan on November 18, 2020
The fish was weighed on a certified scale at bait and tackle shop Park Bait at Montrose Harbor.
The Rating Outlook is Stable.
ANALYTICAL CONCLUSION
The ‘AAA’ rating on the Burbot is based on the species’ ‘AAA’ underlying Fish Default Rating. The ‘AAA’ rating reflects the stable track record of Thomas Krysciak, who netted the fish for van Brenk. Krysciak has previously netted two Illinois record fish on Lake Michigan.
“I can’t catch state records, but I sure can net them,” Krysciak told the Chicago Sun Times. “First he thought he had a bag on, then when it got to the wall, it started to go. I said earlier, ‘If we get a burbot, we are going to eat it.’ It’s poor man’s lobster. Sure as hell, he did it. I called it, I guess. Helluva way to catch his first burbot.”
The rating also reflects a combination of high reserves and budget flexibility that result in a strong capacity to manage through the current economic crisis and future downturns.
ECONOMIC RESOURCE BASE
Fish Ratings expects Burbot caught in Lake Michigan will remain stable over time given the benefits inherent in its proximity to highly developed infrastructure such as Park Bait. Exposure to seasonal leisure activity is a moderate risk.
