Fish Ratings – Chicago – May 12 2025: Fish Ratings has assigned the North American Beaver a ‘BBB’ rating with a Positive Outlook, reflecting strong performance in dam construction and wetland management and to mark the recent election of Pope Leo XIV, the first North American to lead the Catholic Church.
Although some non-believers consider Beavers to be mammals, Fish Ratings classifies them as liturgical fish in line with Catholic doctrine and Fish Ratings’ ecumenical methodology.
Although they are furry, lack gills and give birth to live young, Beavers spend a considerable amount of time time in the water and have robust swimming credentials. They also have substantial ratings headroom due to a ruling by theologians at the Sorbonne in the 17th century, in response to a query from the first Bishop of Quebec, that beaver meat could be considered fish and therefore consumed on Fridays and during Lent.
The ruling is based on the Summa Theologica, the fish rating methodology developed by pioneering analyst Thomas Aquinas, from which most modern methodologies are derived.
The same methodology also applies to Capybara (‘BBB+’; Stable), Muskrat (‘BB’; Positive), Puffin (‘A-‘, Stable) and Skunk-headed Coot (Deuteronomy 14:9).
